Exchange-traded funds are similar to index funds that trade like a single stock. Until the advent of the ETF, it was impossible to trade indexes this easily through an equity account. Most ETFs are relatively static in make-up, like the SPY or QQQQ index funds. Others, like some of the PowerShares funds, are dynamic and the holdings are changed routinely.
